Nicolas John
The heart and soul behind Melbourne's most trusted garden maintenance service

The Journey
I grew up in Europe, surrounded by formal gardens where every hedge was sculpted to perfection and every border told a story. My grandfather was a gardener for a historic estate, and I spent my childhood watching him transform chaos into order with nothing but patience and a pair of shears.
When I arrived in Melbourne 20 years ago, I was struck by how different the climate was—but also how much potential there was. Melbourne gardens had space, light, and clients who truly cared about quality. I started with a ute, a few tools, and one client in Toorak who gave me a chance.
That first client is still with us today. In fact, 95% of our original clients are still on our books. I think it's because we never compromise—same team, same standards, every single visit. No cowboys, no shortcuts, just people who genuinely care about making your garden the best it can be.
These days, I'm less in the field and more focused on training the team, building client relationships, and staying ahead of horticultural trends. But I still get my hands dirty every week—it's in my blood. There's nothing quite like the smell of freshly cut box hedge on a winter morning.

Favorite Plant
Box hedge (Buxus). Nothing beats the crisp lines of a perfectly maintained box hedge. It's sculptural, timeless, and incredibly satisfying to shape.
Morning Ritual
Strong espresso at 5:30 AM, followed by a walk through my own garden. I test every technique on my property first before recommending it to clients.
Family Time
Married with two teenage daughters who think I'm obsessed with hedges (they're right). Sunday dinners are non-negotiable family time, usually with homegrown veggies.
Weekend Escape
Long drives through the Yarra Valley wine region. I appreciate how vineyards are landscaped—there's an elegance to organized rows of vines against rolling hills.
Secret Talent
I make a mean paella. Learned from my grandmother in Spain. The secret? Fresh saffron and patience—kind of like gardening, actually.
Guilty Pleasure
British gardening shows. Monty Don is a legend. I'll binge "Gardeners' World" on weekends and steal ideas shamelessly.
Nicolas's Philosophy
"A garden is never finished—it's a living canvas that changes with every season. Our job isn't just to maintain it, but to understand it, nurture it, and help it reach its full potential."
