Tom Richardson
Water wizard, turf doctor, and the guy who saves gardens during Melbourne's brutal summers
Tom's Story
I was a plumber for years before getting into irrigation. Sounds random, but the skills overlap more than you'd think—pipes, pressure, water flow, problem-solving under the ground where you can't see what's going on.
What drew me to irrigation specifically was the challenge. A well-designed system is invisible but makes all the difference. Too little water and plants suffer. Too much and you waste resources (and money). Getting that balance right—especially in Melbourne where we go from drought to flood in a week—that's the art of it.
These days I spend half my time designing and installing smart irrigation systems, and the other half rescuing tired, patchy lawns. Turf renovation is oddly satisfying—there's nothing quite like seeing a dead lawn come back to life after the right treatment.
I'm also passionate about water efficiency. Melbourne's had its share of water restrictions, and clients want to know their irrigation is smart, not wasteful. That's where tech comes in—weather-responsive controllers, moisture sensors, drip systems. We're not just turning sprinklers on anymore.

Water Nerd
I'm genuinely excited about drip irrigation. Yes, I'm aware that's weird. But when you see how much water it saves compared to sprinklers, you'd get it.
Sports Fanatic
Collingwood supporter (don't judge). Play local footy in winter and cricket in summer. Coach my son's under-12 cricket team on Saturdays—best part of my week.
Family Man
Married with two boys (8 and 12) who destroy our lawn faster than I can fix it. Wife jokes that I care more about client lawns than our own. She's... not entirely wrong.
DIY Everything
Can't help myself—always got a home project going. Currently building a deck (because apparently I don't get enough of outdoor work during the week). Wife is very patient.
BBQ Master
Take my BBQ game seriously. Low and slow brisket is my specialty. Friends joke that I apply the same precision to smoking meat as I do to irrigation design.
Secret Talent
Can fix basically anything. Cars, appliances, random broken stuff—if it's mechanical, I'm interested. The plumbing background helps but mostly I just like problem-solving.
Tom's Philosophy
"Water is life for a garden. Get the watering right, and everything else becomes easier. Mess it up, and you're fighting an uphill battle."
Tom's Top Irrigation Tips
1. Water Deep, Not Often
Lawns need deep watering 2-3 times a week, not daily shallow watering. Deep watering encourages strong root systems that can handle heat stress.
2. Morning Is Best
Water between 4am-8am. Less evaporation, less fungal disease, and your lawn has all day to dry out. Evening watering invites problems.
3. Invest in a Controller Upgrade
Old dial timers are a waste. Modern smart controllers pay for themselves in water savings within a year, plus they're way more convenient.
4. Check for Leaks Monthly
A single broken sprinkler head can waste thousands of liters. Walk your system once a month and fix issues immediately—don't wait.
